Beelitz-Heilstätten

A set of photos taken at Beelitz-Heilstätten, Germany. Portraits of a decaying former sanatorium which served as a military hospital for the German Military Army during WWI, the location of which is a good two hours travel by public transport.

Hitler recuperated from a leg wound here in 1916 following the Battle of the Somme. In 1945 it was occupied by Soviet forces and remained in their hands up until 1995, well after German reunification. Some scenes from The Pianist were even filmed here.

Unfortunately many of the buildings are now structurally unsound or boarded up. It seems a shame that a place with such history is left crumbling.
